A charity hockey game and silent auction featuring local business leaders and former high-level players is set to hit the ice in support of Safe Families Steinbach.
Community support behind new fundraiser
The fundraiser, organized by local businesses including Premier Portable Buildings and Lumber Zone, will take place at the Southeast Event Centre and aims to support Safe Families Steinbach while becoming an annual community tradition.
Sue Doerksen with Safe Families Steinbach says the idea came from local business owners wanting to give back.
“Joel from Lumber Zone approached us with the idea. He and Jamie Penner from Premier Portable Buildings and Jeff Penner decided they wanted to do something good for the charities in our community,” says Sue Doerksen, chapter director of Safe Families Steinbach.
According to Doerksen, organizers hope this will become a yearly event, with Safe Families Steinbach chosen as the first charity recipient.
Hockey game and silent auction
The event begins Friday, May 29, at 3 p.m., opening with an NHL-style draft, featuring recognizable names from the community.
"We’ve got some fantastic players too.”
Among the lineup are former Steinbach Pistons players, Jonah Wasylak and Brenden Purtill, and past American Hockey League player, Jeff Penner.
“We’ve got some pro players here,” Doerksen says, noting pro players Brendan and Tanner Harms will also be in attendance.
Doerksen says 14 businesses from the community have sponsored jerseys.
Admission to the hockey game is free, and no tickets are required.
“Come to the hockey game, bring your family, bring your kids.”

“We have so many incredible businesses in the community that donated to us.”
Auction items include golf packages, a luxury cabin getaway, Winnipeg Blue Bombers tickets, a kayak, a Thermea spa day package, tools and family experiences.
“We are blown away by the generosity and support for Safe Families Steinbach,” she says.
The silent auction is available online with bidding closing Friday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m.
“We encourage you to bid generously on items to help save families. It all goes to charity.”
