Coming off a strong 2025, golf sensation Ty Brewster has already started building toward a special 2026 season, and he can't wait to keep earning respect in the golf world.
Off and running
"It's been good so far," Brewster says with a humble grin. "I mean, early in the year, we didn't have great weather, but as it started to get better, I think I started to shoot better. Had a few tournaments. This last weekend, I had a Golf Manitoba event, the match play qualifier, which I was able to qualify for. As the weather gets better, I feel like my game has been improving."
Golf Manitoba impact
Having an organization like Golf Manitoba supporting junior golfers around the province has made a big impact on the game, as well as players like Brewster. "It's been awesome. They do a really good job of just helping out juniors and getting them to start in tournaments. Here in Steinbach, I've been able to help some junior clinics at Quarry (Oaks). Really, just saying hi to young guys on the course, they really go above to help the young players on the course."
Brewster adds that personally, they've helped him continue to build his own game. "I did the program about three or four years ago, and since then, we've done practices in the winter, and we've had conversations pretty much every week. So being able to just play with those guys and get the coaching from those coaches, it's been awesome. I mean, anytime that you can play golf is a win. To have coaches like that and be able to play against those guys, they've helped us out."
Confidence finding another level
As he continues to grow in the game, Brewster says getting positive results has been a huge shot in the arm for his confidence. "It's huge. I mean, being able to go into the second and third days of tournaments being the guy to beat is definitely a big step up from what I've had in the past. But even playing in big tournaments like Canadian Nationals, when you put up a score, you definitely build confidence as you start to build yourself up on that leaderboard and continue to kind of be a guy to beat."
With that, the young star says the mentality changes when you're the hunted instead of the hunter. "There are definitely pros and cons to it," he says with a chuckle. "I mean, when you're chasing guys, you can feel like you have nothing to lose. When you're on top, going into the second or third day of a tournament, there's definitely more pressure to kind of hold your lead. At the same time, you kind of have a mentality like, 'No one's going to beat me today.' You can definitely build up your confidence like that. I think if you can give yourself good leads like that, you just start to get better and play better with your confidence."
Embracing the grind
Putting in the work is not something Brewster ever tires of, and he's always tweaking and grinding to find ways to get even better. "I mean, in golf, there's always something to work on. So I think it's just kind of playing every week. Especially practicing every day and then seeing what you need to work on. If I'm practicing, usually I'll set aside one day to rest and recharge."
Part of that recharging is making sure he never stops loving golf and enjoying the game with friends. "Usually our tournaments are on weekends, so building up to those, on Thursday and Friday, I'm all business. Really building and practicing, but early in the week, I'm able to play with my buddies or my girlfriend, and just that type of stuff is what makes it fun for me. So if you can set aside at least a day or two to just have fun with your buddies, you know, just play around, I think that keeps the game fun, but also continues to help you practice. So that's what I try to do."
Proudly representing Steinbach
Having support from the local community is also a big deal for Brewster, and he proudly represents Steinbach every time he hits the ball. "It's amazing, there are so many people around here that have helped me, especially Quarry Oaks. Being able to represent this part of the province and for people to know you as a golfer, it's awesome. I really like it."
