Cyclists of all ages took part in Strong Towns Steinbach's latest Family Bike Jam on Saturday evening, an event designed to promote active transportation, community connection and enjoyment of local green spaces.
The monthly ride covers approximately 8 to 10 kilometres at a relaxed pace, with participants stopping midway for a short break.
Strong Towns steering committee member Wade Wiebe says the organization's broader goal is to promote municipal financial responsibility and create more livable communities.
"What it comes down to is the livability of a city and the things that people really care about, like safe streets for their kids, a sustainable budget and green space," says Wiebe.
He adds that cycling helps bring people together while providing an enjoyable and efficient way to get around.
"Cycling makes life enjoyable. It's a great way for people to connect and hang out with people that they wouldn't meet otherwise. It's a great way for families to get out and spend time together in the outdoors."
Colin Sobering, another member of the Strong Towns steering committee, says the rides help residents experience Steinbach's parks, trails and green spaces, while encouraging support for additional cycling infrastructure and community gathering places.
"We want people to enjoy the green space that is provided to us in the city and hopefully that leads people to advocate for more of it. More cycling paths, more parks, more third spaces, things like that," says Sobering.
Participants were encouraged to bring a bicycle, wear a helmet and come prepared for a leisurely ride.
"We are not there to break any speed records. We want everybody of every age and ability to keep up and have a great time," says Wiebe.
Beyond promoting cycling, the rides are intended to create a fun and welcoming environment where residents can enjoy the city together and build connections with neighbours.
Strong Towns Steinbach hosts Family Bike Jams about once a month on weekends. The group also holds monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month at the Public Brewhouse to discuss local advocacy efforts, city issues, and upcoming events.
