Hanover School Division (HSD) superintendent and CEO Joe Thiessen will resign from the role at the end of 2026 after more than three decades in education.
Leaving a lasting impact
“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve HSD as a teacher, principal, and superintendent and CEO,” Thiessen says.
Thiessen joined the division in 1995 as a teacher and worked with students at Niverville Collegiate Institute, Blumenort School and Woodlawn School across the early, middle and senior years programs.
In 2004, he became principal of Mitchell Elementary School, a role he held for 20 years before moving into the division’s top leadership position as superintendent and CEO.
Since becoming superintendent, Thiessen has worked alongside trustees, staff, families and community partners to support student learning and strengthen the division’s commitment to educational excellence.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated staff, students, families, and community members throughout my career,” says Thiessen.
Thiessen’s resignation takes effect Dec. 31, 2026.
Remarks from Board of Trustees
Board chair Dallas Wiebe says the board is grateful for Thiessen’s leadership.
“We want to thank Joe and for his time at HSD,” says board chair Dallas Wiebe, noting Thiessen’s positive attitude left a mark on the division.
“I always call him ‘Joe Positive.’ He’s a great guy, great to work with. We love Joe for that,” Wiebe says.
He says Thiessen’s resignation came as a surprise to the board, and that they’re sorry to see him go.
“Joe has had a remarkable career in Hanover. He’s leaving a lasting impact on students, staff and the broader school community.”
Assistant Superintendent Leanne Peters announces retirement
HSD will see another leadership change, with assistant superintendent Leanne Peters set to retire effective Nov. 30, 2026.
Peters joined the division in 2020 and has served as a senior administrator for 15 years throughout a 27-year career in education.
The division credits Peters with supporting student achievement, well-being and inclusive learning environments, while thanking her for her leadership and service.
