The La Broquerie Hotel was packed Thursday night for the final Chase the Ace draw before the summer hiatus in support of La Broquerie Helping Hands. With a $249,070 jackpot on the line, no one drew the winning card, raising the pot to $274,070 when the fundraiser returns on September 10.
Well-deserved break for volunteers
La Broquerie Helping hands board member Tracy Gromniski says the hiatus is intended to give volunteers a chance to enjoy the summer and take a well-deserved break.
“It takes a lot of volunteers to actually put this on. We see a couple hundred people come through here and it's not just sitting here at the event day of,” says Gromnisk, explaining there is significant preparation involved before each draw. “We want to enjoy some summer and do some golfing and spend time with our families, so we’re going to take a pause for the summer, just like we did last year.”

Raised funds put to good use
La Broquerie Helping hands receives about 37 to 40 per cent of everything raised and the organization is already putting those funds to good use.
Gromniski says the first round of funding has been released, allowing them to start purchasing groceries.
“Bread, milk, non-perishables and perishables to backfill for where we are short on donations so we can make sure that we’re giving three to four meals per family per week in their hamper,” she says.

Thankful for community support
As the prize pot grows, so do the number of people in attendance and Gromniski says organizers are grateful to see the community rally around the fundraiser.
“Everybody’s excited to be supporting the cause and they’re excited that this is happening and they're gathering families and making a weekly event out of it in the community. So, we’re super excited and super happy with how everybody’s kind of come together to support,” she says.
With no winner Thursday night, Chase the Ace will return September 10 with a prize pot of $274,070 and a one-in-seven chance for the next ticket winner to take home the jackpot.
