The Bethesda Foundation’s annual golf tournament continues to grow as both a key fundraiser and a meaningful way to bring supporters together. Scheduled for the Friday of Father’s Day weekend, the event offers participants a chance to enjoy a day on the course while contributing to local health care initiatives.
“It’s both a fundraiser and a donor appreciation event,” says Alisa Harder, Executive Director of the Bethesda Foundation. “We’re able to have a lot of our supporters out for a lovely day at the golf course while also raising money for the important work that we do.”
The tournament complements the foundation’s other major annual fundraiser, Gifts of Light, helping balance seasonal giving while maintaining strong community engagement year-round.
A welcoming day on the course
Held at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club, the Bethesda Drive for Excellence Golf Tournament begins with lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon. From seasoned golfers to first-time participants, the event is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all.
“We welcome all levels of experience,” Harder says. “It’s a best-ball format, so there’s a bit of a cushion. It really allows people to relax, have fun and enjoy the day together.”
Participants can register individually or as part of a twosome or foursome, making it easy for anyone to take part. While there are competitive elements, including longest drive and hole-in-one challenges, the focus remains on camaraderie and community.
“It depends how competitive you are,” Harder says. “But it’s probably most important to surround yourself with people you enjoy spending the day with.”
Growing impact over time
What began in 1993 with just 30 golfers has evolved into a well-attended annual event. The tournament regularly attracts strong participation and, in recent years, has sold out.
Funds raised support the Bethesda Foundation’s general donation fund, which contributes to both large-scale and smaller health care projects in the region. Recent initiatives include enhancements at CancerCare, such as heated patient chairs, as well as a significant contribution toward the new hospital expansion.
“We have an $8-million commitment toward the new hospital expansion that opened this spring,” Harder explains. “These dollars go toward major projects like that, as well as smaller initiatives that make a real difference in patient care.”
Community support at the centre
For Harder, the tournament highlights the strength of community support behind the foundation’s work.
“What we do would not be possible without our donors,” she says. “Everyone is going to need health care at some point, and this work is really meaningful. To see people come out, enjoy a day of golf and do it for a purpose means so much to us.”
Beyond fundraising, the event also offers a chance to connect with supporters in a relaxed setting. Activities like the popular “Beat the Pro” hole add a lighthearted element to the day, creating memorable moments for participants.
“It’s incredibly entertaining to watch,” Harder says. “There’s great banter and a lot of fun throughout the day.”
Registration remains open
Organizers note there are still spots available for this year’s tournament, though interest is strong.
In addition to golfer registration, sponsorship opportunities are also open for local businesses.
With its blend of recreation, philanthropy and community spirit, the Bethesda Drive for Excellence Golf Tournament continues to be a highlight on the summer calendar, offering a simple way for participants to make a lasting impact.
